Hullo, i appreciate the role internet connections have played in society and I would wish this becomes the same case with the developing countries in africa. Well i have different ideas to make this initiation possible but i lack the right connections to push it forward, therefore i request that we set up a communication link so that we can discuss further on how to spread internet usage widely especially in Africa. thnks

Thank you for sharing all of this information. As we’re getting closer I have to admit that I first was intrigued, then wished I could go, and now I still wish I could go but I am scared of what will (and won’t) come of this.
I agree with your fears about government regulation online. If you can’t be free on the Internet, where can you be?…
I also fear that this is more for pomp and credibility than actual solutions, but it seems only time can tell..

The internet has become as important as water supply, power supply, phone lines and sewage disposal. This is your opportunity to remind politicians not to ‘kill’ the Goose that lays Golden Eggs with regulations!
For the Internet to continue as an ‘engine of economic growth’, some of the basics need to be addressed and freedom from Government interference maintained.
These include increasing internet speed to over 1GBps (like South Korea), providing free internet access at public libraries, widespread availability of low cost or free wireless connectivity, freeing up ’cross border’ trading so consumers use the internet to buy goods/services from whoever they chose, wherever they want without imposition of prohibitive local taxes and lastly the obvious suggestion is more government ‘services’ should be easily accessed on the net.

A discussion on freedom and regulation always comes down to coordination of power/influence in order to attain optimal morality of a system. Let me illustrated this with an economic market example.

Given the accumulation of power in central nodes in an economic market, the need for counterbalancing mechanisms, such as democracy become bigger. On the economic market one dollar is one vote and the central nodes (big companies) represent many votes. Democracy on the other hand, balances the market by giving each individual one vote and having the power to limit the set of behaviors in the economc market. The political ideas on what is good and wrong counterbalance the powerful companies behaviors by limiting their freedom. The freedom of companies to form laborcontracts with children for example has been restricted in the western world, even though both companies and children were willing to form these workrelations. The moral view that childlabor is wrong resulted in political laws limiting possible behaviour in the economic market. In this view a discussions on opening economic markets mean a shift of power from votes to dollars. This might be good when the restrictions imposed upon markets reduce the functioning (allowed behaviours) of a market too much. So in economic markets politics forms a mechanism which balances powers and coordinates morality and freedoms.

Given the way the web nowadays shifts towards fewer, increasingly more powerfull centres (Google, Facebook), the need for a counterbalancing mechanism becomes clearer. In the normal world politics exist where the power of money is controled by voters. On the web we also would like to limit the set of possible behaviors (phishing, spam). We nowadays use national politics to do so, but given the global nature of the web this hardly suffices. A better coordinationmechanism is needed by which we nettizens can control unwanted behavior of powerful parties on the web. We need a way to reach a common moral ground restricting the behavior of everybody, including the powerful players. The voting with your feet principle is just not good enough (if people don’t like googles policy in China, they still keep using their gmail/search). Another coordination mechanism is needed. I hope the e-G8 will adress these kinds of topics.

Who’s representing and defending the interests of internet users in this event? I think this is a major issue you raised in your post. It deserves more visibility.In my point of view there’s a plan behind it, a political and econmic one and it’s not by chance that it comes a couple of months after the meeting organized by Obama with Jobs& Co…in that case as well not much information was disclosed on the issues discussed by the attendees. Hello, i’m not a “big player” on the internet debate. i’m just a simple inernet user, so -maybe- i’ve not all the “necessary knowdlege”, and the “political finesse” for talking about all this. but even if i’m just a “common man”, i would like to say something about. I don’t trust (i don’t trust absolutely) whoever thinks or talk about “controlling the Internet”. I think the Net should be totally free, and without political or economical control. air is not subject to a political control, water it’s not subject too. Basic human rights are not negotiable. As someone said before myself “whoever trade freedom for security, don’t gain the second and lose the first”. to put it simply: music industry or movie mongul lose some money because someone put the new blockbuster on the net? So what? i’m not crying for them. Infringement copyright hurt the authors of the intellectual properties? don’t make me laugh. the only ones wich are hurt are the owner of the reproduction rights of the intellectual properties, not the authors. Free access to contents is a new shape of the basic human rights, growing from the Internnet revolution. This G-8 is an attempt to create a “world standard”, as the WTO is for world trading. ONE autority, wich decide what’s right and what’s wrong with the Internet. And this is not accettable. you can’t “compromise” with the ones wich has this idea. you can only say “no way”. But i’m sure , in the end, the mega-company and the governments will create some “Internet International Laws”, and the only way to be free will be to act outside the “laws”. and i’m sure sooner or later some big scandal (probably a sexual one) will blow up, because people must think Internet is a badbadbad place, where bad people does bad things to others, and we -good and decent citizens, need strong and repressive laws to be safe. do you want to do something good? go to the meeting, eat all you can at the buffet, have fun, enjoy the hotels, and say “no” to anything wich would control the internet. simple.

Was invited as well: on my program (which I received today) the Louvre dinner is not mentioned, they just say “e-G8 evening” –> maybe the venue changed?
There are definitely some issues that need to be evoked during the meeting but I think it is great news that a) they organise such an event to discuss them and b) they invite people such as you who are aware of these issues and can raise awareness of it amongst invitees.
Already the title of the second Plenary: “Rewiring Societies: The Internet has empowered people around the world, most recently and most spectacularly in the Middle East, but also in many other instances. Are we seeing the emergence of a new society: more open, transparent and free?” goes in the right direction…

I think this is spot on. But I am deeply concerned that our current leaders lack the enlightenment of the Madisons & Jeffersons, and their commercial and political instincts would most probably lead to an awful document (think the recent EU ‘constitution’ vs the elegance and universality of the US constitution…)

Anyhow good luck and look forward to reading your post conference insights.
