Too bad that T2 didn't make it out of beta. Evri has a wholly different feeling, more like "just another news site". I'm kinda glad I stuck with del.icio.us for my archives.

But your "lessons learned" are excellent! Would it be possible to get those as a separate post, so that direct linking would be easier?

Thanks so much for posting this Nova – I've found the story and your insights most valuable. We're currently “in countdown” to launching a site with many of the same aims as twine and we've had to solve many of the same problems. Chief amongst these was storage architecture – we've had to build from scratch a graph database app.

You'll be pleased to know that what we've done, we've done with no VC, so we've certainly had to “spend less” The next few months will tell whether we've spent enough.

I must say, however, that I don't share your confidence when it comes to The Semantic Web in its current form. “Semantification” will happen, but I don't believe the current crop of standards (RDF, OWL, sparql etc.) will achieve it.

I read most of your article. Although I'm sure you wanted to emphasize the good things, I can't help but see the agony that ran just below the surface, at least at times.

As for offshore – I agree with you Nova – there are a couple of outstanding companies who are the 'back end' of some major successful companies. One in particular is Value Labs in India who have made sure they have project/product managers within the US as the efficiency bridge. And I also agree with 'Jimbo” – there are also some excellent product developers/inventors in the US who don't require an army of engineers to deliver the product. It's all in the strategy as we know…
