Hi, you should check out www.nyctalktome.com – a couple folks who went around NYC for a year sitting with a big sign that proclaimed “Talk To Me” in front of them. They have some amazing stories, some nice newspaper/tv appearances with more info, and are currently writing a book about it all. One of them just happens to be my sister 
Their idea is to get people to start talking to strangers and the people that flow all around them every day. Maybe that would be a Good Thing.
Oh, and you wanted some info about us submitters? I’m Patrick Barry, a master’s student at CMU in Human Computer Interaction, but mainly interested in social software. My web page that I’m currently working on (not at all ready for public awareness) is surrealpenguin.com
