Google's Browser Project…And Ours…

So, rumor has it that Google is working on a browser and/or other software to challenge Microsoft. And, what’s more, this may be based on Mozilla…. interesting…. If true, the folks at Google should get in touch with me… without disclosing too much (yet), we are working on a project (with SRI, for DARPA) to build a Java-based fully-semantic open-sourced PIM that grafts Mozilla onto my company’s Semantic Applications Platform. The result is an integrated cross-platform OWL-ontology-based PIM suite…Basically it’s “Semantic Mozilla” and will set the stage for Mozilla to become the platform for the Semantic Web. Public open-source release date is set for summer 2005, but it’s already working now in the lab. You won’t believe how cool it is…working on this feels like NCSA and the early days of Mosaic… to be continued….

Wow! This sounds very cool. I hope, at some point, you’ll prepare a ‘devoted’ newsfeed or newsletter that we can subscribe to in order to keep up with the progress and release. Best wishes in your project!

Thanks. Oh and forgot to mention — it’s all going to be LGPL…
If you are interested in keeping up, just email me your address with “Semantic PIM” in the subject line and I’ll add you to a list. If/when we get around to inviting early beta-testers for the public release, I’ll invite you in…

Finally, someone reaching for that low-hanging fruit. Public open-source release date is set for summer 2005.

    Google Browser?

I’d like to take full credit for the idea. (p 33) rumor has it. Entrepreneurs are still better, though.

How is this different than Mozilla meets Chandler (Kapor’s open source PIM)?
    Thanks for any feedback.
    Good luck!

  9. Nova Spivack says:

It is quite different from Chandler on a technical level. Chandler does not use OWL ontologies for one thing. Chandler is not really semantic in nature. Furthermore, Chandler is in Python, our product is in Java. There are many other differences as well. Our system is a full platform with many applications other than just PIMs.

Lynda, you must be talking about 4179 Toutatis, an asteriod that is 2.9 miles long by 2.4 by 1.5 miles across.
Toutatis will be at its closest to Earth at on Wednesday — it will be 962,951 miles from earth(4 times the distance to the moon)– according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Although it will be the closest we’ve come to a doomsday asteriod in nearly a century, I’m afraid you’ll still have to go to work on Thursday. For more info see this story
Nova, sounds exciting. I’m looking forward to when you can release more info than the project’s list of buzzwords. I’ll be checking back.
